History
Fort Belvoir, Virginia is located approximately 10 miles from Alexandria, in the heart of the northern Virginia wilderness. Named by Colonel William Fairfax when he purchased the land as his estate in 1741, Belvoir literally means "beautiful to see." Though the estate remained private through the 19th century, it was purchased by the District of Columbia in 1910 and became Fort Belvoir in 1935. Today, Fort Belvoir is a strategic, power-projection support installation, providing essential administrative, logistical, and contingency support to the nation's capital.
Roughly one third of Fort Belvoir is designated as a wildlife sanctuary, accounting for over 1,400 of the base's acreage. For more history on Fort Belvoir, please visit: www.globalsecurity.org or follow the link below!
